The deep is a massive subject, which tackles some quite complex issues, and although there are certain variations in understanding, all those who hold with the doctrine of ruin-restoration would agree on one thing. The face of the deep is frozen, and forms a . crystalline ”sea” which acts as a barrier between the two heavens of this corrupt cosmos, and the third heaven, or paradise, the abode of God. (2 Corinthians 12:4.)
Back in the heavens and the earth of old, and in a vain attempt to exalt himself, Lucifer . abused the authority he'd once been given, and to such an extent that the ancient world under his dominion was reduced to a wilderness, until by the word of God it finally perished.
From Ezekiel 14:12-17. How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! …...For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: …...They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;.....That made the world as a wilderness.....?
2 Peter 3:5-6...... by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:Whereby the world THAT THEN WAS, being overflowed with water, perished:
For how long the Solar System remained in water-logged darkness, who can tell? But it did so until ''the foundation of the world,'' the 1st of the 6 days, when God said ''let there be light,'' and set to restore the barren earth.
Genesis 1:2-3. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
Job 38:30. The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.
The Sea of Glass.
It would seem that whilst the face of the deep is frozen, the deep itself refers to everything which exists beneath that frozen barrier. ”The sea” is described in the Book of Revelation in terms of a crystalline sea, and can be seen ”in type” as the molten sea in King Solomon’s temple.
Revelation 4:6.And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal:…
2 Chronicles 4:2. Also he made a molten sea of ten cubits from brim to brim……
If we were able to view it, I guess it would stretch horizon-less in every direction, and everything beyond it exists outside of time and space, for it is the eternity of God. Encased within and beneath the sea of glass is the entire creation, all matter, all time, and all space.
These waters above the heavens separate the creation from the Creator, the holy from the profane, or life from death. Above the ''sea'' is life and life everlasting, but everything beneath the ''sea'' is subject to death.
Psalms 148:4. Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens.
Job 26:5. Dead things are formed from under the waters, and the inhabitants thereof.
Compared to God who is holy, and who dwells beyond the cosmos, the entire physical creation can only be considered as profane, for regardless of any temporal beauty, all is touched by decay and subject to death.
By its very nature, there can be no doubt that everything subject to death, comes short of the glory of God.
The sea didn’t exist in the generation of the heavens and the earth of old (2 Peter 3:5), but was designed for this generation only. When this heavens and earth finally pass away, the ”sea” will have served its purpose, and in the future ''new heavens and earth'' it will be no more.
Revelation 21:1. And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
One day, according to Scripture, the heavens and the earth, and all the elements will be burned up with fire, for all which is subject to the ravages of death is unclean, and ultimately must either be fully cleansed, or completely destroyed.
The Bottomless Pit.
The Genesis deep didn’t magically disappear around 6,500 years ago, but was restructured when God divided the waters of the deep with a firmament, and into which he placed the sun, moon, and stars. Nowadays we refer to the firmament as the universe, but God called it Heaven. Genesis 1:8. And God called the firmament Heaven….
Although translated as ”the deep,” the Hebrew Dictionary definition of teh-home, as. an abyss, as a surging mass of water. However, the Greek equivalent of teh-home, in both the Septuagint and the NT Greek text, is abussos, a word which has far more sinister undertones.
Gr. abussos-depthless, i.e. (specially) (infernal) “abyss”:–deep, (bottomless) pit.
In the King James New Testament,”the deep” can have two applications, depending upon which particular word appears in the original text. One, bathos, refers to the depths of the ocean, as in;
Luke 5:4. Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
However, out of the nine occasions where the word abussos appears in the Greek text, only two are translated as ”the deep.” Neither of these two passages refer to the depth of the ocean, but to a place of torment and death.
Romans 10:7.Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)
Luke 8:31. And they[the devils] besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.
Although Jesus allowed the legion of devils to enter a herd of swine, which in a state of panic, plummeted into the sea and drowned, this was a play upon words. For the devils hadn’t begged not to be sent into the deep, as in the bathos, or ocean, but out into the deep, the abussos, or bottomless pit.
So whilst it’s clear that the prime meaning of abussos is the bottomless pit, the fact that it can also mean ”the deep” confirms that the Genesis ”abussos” can also be rendered as the . bottomless pit, which is how it appears in the Septuagint. It’s worth noting too, the dictionary definition of the Hebrew ”choshek’‘-darkness.
the dark; hence (literally) darkness; figuratively, misery, destruction, death, ignorance, sorrow, wickedness:–dark(-ness), night, obscurity.
This then gives a deeper(pardon the pun) understanding of the miserable condition of the once perfect creation, as described in Genesis 1:2, especially when paraphrased.
”And the earth was laid waste, desolate, and ruined, and darkness, death, misery, and sorrow, was upon the face of the bottomless pit.”
This devastation according to the apostle Peter, was due to a water-deluge of incredible proportion which had swept through the cosmos and destroyed the ancient world.
Genesis records how God divided the waters of the ”abussos” by restructuring and placing the present-day universe in their midst, and what better way is there to describe the universe than in terms of a ” bottomless pit?”
Now although one might well be a portal to the other, the bottomless pit and hades or hell, are two separate locations. The latter is generally considered to be somewhere within the earth, whereas the abyss lies somewhere beyond the earth.
The rich man in hell (KJB) or hades in other versions, referred to an impassable . gulf fixed between the lost souls and the saved, which almost certainly refers to the abyss.
Luke 16:26. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
As for the existence of extra-terrestrial life, the Bible makes it quite clear that the bottomless pit is inhabited, and the inhabitants are ruled by a king.
Revelation 9:11. And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.
Remember, whilst . we refer to the firmament as Outer Space or the Universe, God calls it Heaven. And when the enemy comes in force, it’s not from a land at the far end of the earth, but from a far country from the end of HEAVEN. Yet at the same time, the enemy will come from out of the bottomless pit.
Genesis 1:8. And God called the firmament Heaven.
Isaiah 13:5. They come from a far country, from the end of heaven, even the LORD, and the weapons of his indignation, to destroy the whole land.
Revelation 9:2-3. And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit …..And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.
Therefore, from a perspective here on earth, what might be seen as an alien invasion from the heavens , would from a Biblical perspective, be in reality an invasion from out of the bottomless pit
